We’re making a new game! (Adventurus Arithmetica)

Hello, chums!

So, for the last couple of months, Charlie has been coding and designing the prototype for our next game and it’s now at a state where we can show it to you guys.

Starting a new game is a fantastic time where the team can share the birthing process of an idea, and as it grows each of us can find ways we can use our unique skills to make it the best game possible.

So what sort of game is it! Well, it’s what we’d call a mental arithmetic adventure RPG.

BD79fJcCYAA1hYu

Travelling through distant lands you will meet monstrous creatures which you’ll battle using your powers of fast mental arithmetic as they pose you increasingly demanding maths problems.

What we’ve got right now is a vertical slice which show-cases the combat, navigation, animation and random map generation.  Let’s have a look at a video of the most recent prototype:

There’s a loooooooooooooong way to go now until we’ve got a completed concept, let alone the finished game. We still need to prototype quests, treasure chests, boss fights… along with any other features we choose to add to make the game play experience better.

The place-holder art you can see in the video will be replaced by the hand-drawn work of an illustrator (who we will tell you more about soon).

The music is in the process of being researched. Barry is up ’till the wee small hours every night researching medieval music to bring you a hint of authenticity in his own inimitable style.

Anyway, we hope you enjoyed the video and continue to follow the development of our game as it takes shape!

All set for TIGA 2012!

We’re all totally pumped to have a good time at the TIGA 2012 awards.  What’s super cool about it is that it will be the first time the team has actually met in person since the project started back in March.  Barry Island and Charlie haven’t seen each other for the best part of six years!

We’ve also never been to anything like an awards ceremony. It’s gonna be a totally awesome reunion and party for us. We’ve also got ChetMega from Townhouse Records and his entourage coming along to enjoy the event along with some other VIP guests who’ve supported Frutorious all the way from the beginning.

ChetMega – the voice of Frutorious F.I.G.

Another cosmic thing is we think we’re the smallest team up for a TIGA award with only three dudes! It would be a total underdog victory if we won anything, but we think we’ve really captured in our game the run away independent spirit of videogames in both casual and audio design and hope that gets recognition :)

We’re pumped. We’ve got Friday off. We’ve got our T-Shirts ready…

Look at our awesome t-shirts!

We’ve got our nomination announcement trailer ready…

We’ll be rockin the awards ceremony and representing at the after show. If you’re there too come along and say hi! Stop and have a drink! Pop out for a fag! Chat about games and music with us! We’re pretty awesome dudes, we’ll be the ones wearing Frutorious T-Shirts :)

See you there!

Vote Frutorious at TIGA 2012!

We need to make the shortlist in these TIGA awards so bad.  It’d be amazing to be nominated as it’d really help give Frutorious and our teeny tiny games company the help we need to make better stuff for everyone!

We’re up for short listing in two categories, ‘Casual’ (small studio) and ‘Audio Design’ (small studio)

Here’s why you should vote for us in these categories…

CASUAL : (Small Studio)

Described by some as ‘Angry Birds meets Rainbow Islands’ – Frutorious is a flicky, bouncey platform game that sits along-side its AppStore casual companions with its head held high, despite having a budget of pretty much zero. (About £6 on plasticine and felt!)

It’s a visually striking game with a charming art style made completely of plasticine and felt, including an introduction story showcasing hand painted artwork.

With a simple and intuitive ‘pull-back and ping’ style slingshot controls and a multiple rewards for each level, Frutorious is designed so that people of all ages and abilities can have fun and find their own level of challenge.

It offers a fun and original casual gameplay experience in the main game, and as an aside also features a game mode for those players who want the basic challenge elements in the game condensed into an uber-casual 8-bit style endless arcade mode – Frutorious Pro

It has been featured on Indiegames.com, and was also chosen as one of the ‘three apps worth downloading’ on Appolicious.

We have loads of happy players who have given us over 30 five star reviews on the AppStore!

We believe Frutorious should be nominated for best casual game from a small studio because we’ve worked really hard with very little resources to make a game that everyone can enjoy: male or female, young or old, busy or bored. It also is embued with a particularly eccentric quirkiness that makes it feel distinctly British.

It is cheap as chips 69p/99c  to download, and it also features a huge amount of extra level content expandable via I.A.P.

AUDIO DESIGN (Small Studio)

We concentrated on making pure, joyful and catchy music to compliment our game.  We feel that the sound track is unique in its video-game inspired interpretation of funk and dub, proudly wearing its roots on its sleeve while perfectly complimenting the game-play and artistic aesthetic.

The Frutorious title theme harks back to 16 bit days of blue sky gaming, reminiscent of the soul of much loved arcade and home console games of the 90′s.

The in-game level music is a collection of synthy, videogame inspired dub and funk tracks, and we even created an acoustic version of the title theme which plays during the certain parts of the game.

From banging 8-bit anthems, through toe tapping but sinister dubstep, all the way to soulful acoustic guitar melodies… Frutorious is a musical delight.  The sound effects perfectly compliment both the music and the game-play, consisting of a mixture of live recordings and synthesised noises… all coming together to create a sound that just ‘is video games’.

We also have the voice of up-coming UK rapper ‘ChetMega’ providing the in-game announcements by ‘Frutorious F.I.G.’ which amplifies the game-play thrill of achieving huge scores.

You can listen to the Frutorious official sound track here -  http://soundcloud.com/swith-1/sets/frutorious-ost/ - we’re sure you’ll be humming our Frutorious main theme in no time ;)

Again, please please do the right thing and drop us a vote, it’d be totally rad if we won something!

What would you like to see from us next?

The Shepherd update is off, a Frutorious update is in the pipeline… and thoughts at Infinite State Games towers are beginning to turn to what’s next.

We’re not short of ideas.  Here at Infinite State Games, ideas is one thing we’re rolling in.  We’ve got masses of games we want to make and tonnes of original concepts bursting to get out…

As well as making games that we want to make for ourselves, it’s important for us to hear the opinions of our fans.  After all, it’s you guys that have helped us get this far.  So we’re opening a poll for you guys to show to us what you personally would like to see next from our studio :)

Here’s the choices…

We’ll close the poll in a couple of weeks.  We’re really looking forward to seeing what you think!

Frutorious: Gameplay Trailer!

We’ve made our third and final pre-launch video. Three videos, eh!  That’s a lot of videos isn’t it?! Well it’s more than usual, but then this is an unusual game.  We realised that it needed that little extra push to get into people’s hearts and minds that one prod wouldn’t do, what we needed was an opening pre-launch triumvirate salvo of three very different videos.

Let’s talk about our three pronged trailer attack – our ‘Shonk and Awe’ publicity plan!

How do you solve a problem like Frutorious?

Firstly, the game has a light-hearted feel to it and a quirky vibe which is hard to describe in words, especially when you’re so involved in the game. That’s why we felt the best introduction to the game would be our first trailer ‘The Making Of: Frutorious.’ We wanted to get across the fact that we’re a focussed, passionate team who at the same time aren’t taking ourselves very seriously.  We also wanted to approach the ‘making of’ documentary structure with a much more playful style.

Secondly; the mix of felt, plasticine and hand drawn art is something we’re very very proud of, so we definitely want to show it off as much as possible!  That’s why our second trailer ‘Frutorious: Story Trailer’  focussed on the hand-drawn elements and set up the back-story for the game.

Thirdly, the concept of a sling-shot platform game with fruit, arcade elements, pinball, golf and 90′s Hip-Hop puns doesn’t translate well without just showing video of it being played.  The more video of people actually playing the game we can get out, the easier it is for people to understand what the game is about, which brings us here today with the third video  ’Frutorious: Gameplay Trailer’.

As well as showing people what the game is like to play, it also showcases the sort of variety in visuals and gameplay that we’ve got going on.  We hope it gets about and people see it!
